This article contains information on the signing methods that Penneo supports.
Penneo offers two categories of signing methods
- Electronic ID
- Simple Electronic Signatures
Both options enable the creation of electronic signatures, but not all electronic signatures are equally valid and enforceable from a legal perspective. Read more about it here or watch the video below.
Below are the signing methods we support. Click on one to read more about it.
You can also see what the signature for each method looks like in the final document by clicking here or reading this article about the final document signed via Penneo.
Swedish BankID
BankID has been developed by several large banks for use by individuals, authorities, and companies. The customer’s identification is guaranteed by the bank issuing the BankID. If you want to have a closer look at the process of signing using BankID with Penneo, check out this article.
According to Swedish law and regulations within the European Union, BankID is an identification method that ensures authentication of the signer. Therefore, a digital signature made with a BankID is legally binding.
Norwegian BankID
BankID is a personal and simple electronic ID for secure identification issued by all the banks in Norway. If you want to have a closer look at the process of signing using BankID with Penneo, check out this article.
Norway follows the “Act on implementation of the EU Regulation on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market” (Lov om elektroniske tillitstjenster).
The Norwegian BankID meets the official requirements set forth under the EU eIDAS Regulation for authentication and legally binding electronic signatures.
Itsme®
itsme® is a secure identity solution available across Europe, allowing users to log in securely, share their ID data or sign documents by using their smartphone.
All signatures with itsme® through Penneo are Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES). If you want to have a closer look at the process of signing using itsme® with Penneo, check out this article.
Finnish FTN
The Finnish Trust Network (FTN) is managed by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and consists of a set of banks and mobile companies (Mobiilivarmenne) providing eID schemes in compliance with the Finnish Act on Strong Electronic Identification and Electronic Trust Services.
Any Finnish citizen or legal entity owning one of the network’s IDs can now use Penneo for online authentication, to carry out secure transactions, and to sign legally binding agreements. If you want to have a closer look at the process of signing using FTN with Penneo, check out this article.
Simple Electronic Signatures
Signing with a Simple Electronic Signature means drawing your signature on a tablet or computer, uploading a picture of your signature, or creating a text-based signature (please note that if you have Belgian itsme activated as a signing method for your company, signers will not get the option to make a text-based signature). If you want to have a closer look at the process of signing using Simple Electronic Signature, check out this article.
A Simple Electronic Signature is much safer than a conventional pen-made signature, as both the IP address of the signer and the date and time of the signature are registered and become an integral part of the final digital document. As a result, content integrity and non-alteration are ensured. However, a signature made using a Simple Electronic Signature is not as secure as one made with an e-ID, nor does it meet the eIDAS Regulation requirement. Therefore, we only recommend using it as an exception when you require a signature from an individual who does not possess or cannot access an electronic ID.
If you are to send out a document and want to enable your signer to sign it using a Simple Electronic Signature, check out this guide: How to activate the Simple Electronic Signatures option.
Danish MitID
MitID is the next generation of NemID, meant to provide users with a better and safer digital experience and to provide Danish society with a more resilient eID solution that will be able to withstand the digital threats that the future might bring.
You can use MitID for everything that you are used to using your NemID for. That can be anything from logging into your bank account, checking your tax returns, or signing documents via Penneo.
