Operation and Security of Timestamps
The last page of a document signed via Penneo displays a timestamp next to each signature. This is a digital record showing the exact time the signature was executed in the system. To ensure the document's integrity, these timestamps are cryptographically linked. You can view them in three different places:
- On the last page of the signed document.
- In the casefile audit log.
- In the file's technical properties (using a standard PDF reader).
Understanding the Time Zone (UTC)
Penneo uses Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as its technical reference standard for recording all signatures. As a result, the time shown by the Penneo timestamp may differ from the signer's local time. To verify the actual local time of a signature, simply apply the time offset corresponding to the signer's region (which ranges from UTC-12:00 to UTC+14:00).
Calculation example: In Central Europe (such as Denmark or France), the time zone is UTC+1 in standard time (winter) and UTC+2 in daylight saving time (summer). If a document shows a signature at 10:00 AM UTC in winter, it was therefore 11:00 AM local time for the signer.
